Seeking Submissions from Around the World

Rural Fiction Magazine would like to publish more writers from around the world, regardless of your country of origin.

RFM is seeking short stories, poems, reviews and press releases, on rural fiction books that reflect the beauty, tranquility, joys, anguish, sorrows, humor, tragedy, comedy, and drama of rural life. RFM believes that all stories are about people and that genre is secondary. Therefore, RFM is open to almost all genres such as mainstream, literary, romance, horror, western, mystery, thriller, historical, realist, coming of age (Bildungsroman for those who speak German), science fiction, magical realism, dystopian, etc, so long as they are connected to rural life and culture anywhere in the world.

Your work must be in English. It can a translation from your native language, but it must be in English, which is spoken around the globe and gives the work and author substantial worldwide exposure.

Please note that there is no pay for this other than a publication credit and exposure to the American and English markets. However, all rights remain with the author.

Currently, RFM is publishing material within a few weeks of acceptance, though this may vary depending on the number of submissions.

Call for Submissions: Stories Set in Coffee and Tea Farming Regions Around the World

Rural Fiction Magazine is (RFM) seeking short fiction and poetry that involve coffee and tea farming or are set in coffee and tea farming areas. Please see RFM’s Submissions page for details on how to submit stories and poetry for publication. Of course, as always, there is no pay for any stories or poems except exposure to the English-speaking, especially American and British, markets.

RFM believes strongly that all stories are ultimately about people and that genre is secondary. Likewise any story submitted that involves coffee and tea farming should be primarily about people and human interaction and not about production methods or strategies or any technical aspect of coffee and tea farming.

These stories may be of any genre but the mainstream and literary genres stand a better chance of being accepted than experimental stories.

These stories may also be from any nation but stories from coffee and tea producing nations will be especially appreciated.

Adapting to the Foreseeable Future

I try to keep RFM apolitical. However, regardless of anyone’s political leanings, I think most people would agree that troubling times likely lie ahead.

Troubled people often seek relief from their worries by escaping mentally to a better, more peaceful world. Therefore, I believe that RFM will become not only more popular but also more important to people psychologically.

Accordingly, you may gradually see some minor or subtle changes to RFM. The intent of these changes will be to offer people an avenue to a better, although fictional, world.

This might affect what I accept in a slight way, but as always in the past, I will be open to all genres and topics so long as they meet the submission guidelines. The only statement I can make at this point (this is just a vague, raw, undeveloped concept) is that RFM might lean a bit more towards publishing stories about the basics of human existence that unite us worldwide.

What basics do I mean? I mean whatever you see as basic or elemental to human nature. If you’re lost as where to start, I recommend checking out Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs or some other psychological or sociological principles. Those could be starting points, but what really interests me is your ideas based on your observations of humanity. After all, isn’t that where all great literature starts?

I still have no hard date for when RFM will be wide open to submissions, but I may gradually publish more and more of what has already been submitted (I have a tremendous backlog).

Anyway, these are some thoughts for the moment.

I am also open to short plays, folklore, legends, tall tales, essays, etc. I am open to almost all genres such as fantasy, science-fiction, horror, mainstream, literary, romance, etc, so long as they are connected to rural life and/or have a rural setting.
